How do I celebrate Pride?

You want to support the cause but don’t know what you can do to help out. Don’t worry, there are many people just like you that don’t know they can do to support this cause.

June is here, and we all know that it is Pride Month! This month is dedicated to celebrating and supporting the LGBTQ+ community. There is so much more that can be done rather than attending a parade to make your impact known.

5 ways you can celebrate Pride Month:

1. Donate money or your time to help out LGBTQ organizations

There are many different organizations that help advocate for the LGBTQ community. These organizations offer a variety of services such as fighting for rights, offering the community different health services, managing helplines, and more. These organizations can always use our help. Family EqualityLGBT National Help CenterHuman Rights CampaignPFLAGGLADGLSEN, and GLMA are some of the awesome organizations you can help.

2. Support LGBTQ businesses (Owned or Ally)

Local businesses are the foundation of our cities, towns, and many peoples’ lives. There is no better time than the present to start supporting local businesses that are owned by people in the LGBTQ community. Are you looking to participate in Pride somewhere other than your town? Check out this website that can help you find your Pride-friendly hotels.

Even better than that here are 19 LGBTQ+ brands to shop some great products. This money helps support your local community as well! If you are looking for LGBTQ businesses near you, this website offers a directory of anything you can think of.

3. Learn about what the issues are

Whether you identify as LGBTQ+ or not, it is crucial to understand the many issues that impact this community. The ACLU is a great resource to use to track the legislation that affects LGBTQ rights all around the country. You can dins out about laws in your state and fight to help end the discrimination in your community. The Trevor Project, National Survey on LGBTQ Youth reports that

40% of LGBTQ respondents seriously considered attempting suicide in the past twelve months, with more than half of transgender and nonbinary youth having seriously considered suicide
• 68% of LGBTQ youth reported symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder in the past two weeks, including more than 3 in 4 transgender and nonbinary youth
• 48% of LGBTQ youth reported engaging in self-harm in the past twelve months, including over 60% of transgender and nonbinary youth
• 46% of LGBTQ youth report they wanted psychological or emotional counseling from a mental health professional but were unable to receive it in the past 12 month
• 10% of LGBTQ youth reported undergoing conversion therapy, with 78% reporting it occurred when they were under age 18
• 29% of LGBTQ youth have experienced homelessness, been kicked out, or run away
• 1 in 3 LGBTQ youth reported that they had been physically threatened or harmed in their lifetime due to their LGBTQ identity
• 61% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being prevented or discouraged from using a bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity
• 86% of LGBTQ youth said that recent politics have negatively impacted their well-being
• Transgender and nonbinary youth who reported having pronouns respected by all or most people in their lives attempted suicide at half the rate of those who did not have their pronouns respected

It is important that people are educated in this issues to see how they can help appropriately.

4. Learn the history of Pride Month

During Pride Month it is also important to recognize and remember the struggles that LGBTQ people have faced throughout history. From the Stonewall Riots in June, 1969 which was the start of protests and demanding equal rights. Not very long after that, the first Pride parade took place. Everyone is able to celebrate Pride Month because of the struggles of those who came before.

5. Who says you need to stop celebrating at the end of the month

Everything that has been mentioned within this list is stuff you can do every month of the year! This Pride Month is about love, acceptance, and being proud of who you are in your own skin. Whether you are traveling for Pride or celebrating right at home, stay safe!
